Victorian Submarine stereoview. Made in 1863 for sixty thousand dollars originally called Halstead's Folly, one of the builders. Later christened The Intelligent Whale. It was the North’s answer to the CSS Hunly and Pioneer. Built by Scovel S. Meriam, August Price, Cornelius S. Bushnell at American Submarine Company. 28 feet long, four thousand pounds and propelled by a single screw hand crank, the Navy vessel was condemned in 1872. Sent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for display, latter the Washington DC Memorial Museum. Sub now rests an exhibit at the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey, in Sea Girt.
